Girl, 16, stabbed to death by boy after she refuses to go to the prom with him

Tragedy struck a Milford, Conn., high school on Thursday when a 16-year-old boy asked a 16-year-old girl if she would go with him to the junior prom on Friday. After she said no, he stabbed the girl to death, according to reports.

Emergency responders were called to Jonathan Law High School in Milford early Friday. Maren Sanchez died from her wounds at Bridgeport Hospital, said Milford Police Chief Keith Mello according to the Associated Press.

The boy who committed the crime has been taken into custody. His name wasn't released because of juvenile offender laws.

"I know the news venues interviewed students who said that," Milford police officer Jeffrey Nielsen told the Los Angeles Times. "We are not confirming that at this time. This is a raw and active investigation. We are interviewing witnesses, but are not confirming what caused this. All we know is that we had a stabbing."

A student witness told Fox News that the attacker asked Sanchez to prom inside a stairwell at the school. When Sanchez, who had a boyfriend, turned him down, the suspect started to strangle her, then pushed her down the stairs and stabbed her.

Students were sent home after the incident, and the dance has been postponed.
