Why You Should Play Video Games With Your Gran

Technology is emerging fast, and video games have become a common thing in almost every household. But did you know that the young generation is not the only ones getting hooked with video games these days? A study showed that many older people have become gamers in the past decade.

The Glue That Sticks Family Together

As reported by The Conversation, the number of aging population is growing quickly, and with that the composition of a family is also changing. This means that there is an increasing need for a connection among family members that can go up to four generations. Video games can be a glue that brings and sticks the family together.

The Conversation's study found that grandparents who regularly play video games with their grandchildren find the activity enjoyable, fun and bonding. Games help create a common ground that the elderly and the younger generation can share.

A 63-year-old told The Conversation, "It is like a secret language when we talk about it in front of the rest of the family, something that ties us. I feel like I have been more a part of my granddaughter's life now that we get to do something closer to her generation."

Playfulness And Positivity

Another report from Gizmodo said that playfulness also helps create more positivity among elderly people, particularly to those who are suffering from depression. The study by Games for Health Journal involved 49 older adults with subthreshold depression who play Wii Sports and Wii Fit games. The results revealed that both groups showed improved depression, self-efficacy and positive emotions.
