With the children off school for at least three months for their summer vacation, parents might worry about the "summer slide" experience. This is what happens when the kids get off track and lose their interest for learning.
But with proper guidance and motivation, parents can avoid the summer slide with their children. It's possible for kids to still enjoy the respite from school while still learning and progressing academically. Here are some of the best ways:
1) Create a "homeroom" environment in your house. Parents can introduce fun learning activities to kids during the long summer lull. For instance, it might be good to organize a book club participated by household members, or perhaps enlist other kids in the neighborhood too. Establish regular sessions for Math activities. There are free Math worksheets organized by grade level via Adapted Mind. Make children help out in the kitchen by letting them learn to cook and bake. Keep them abreast with current events by talking about news stories that happened around the world.
2) Keep the children engaged about school. Parents are encouraged to hold regular conversations with their children about their kids' social life and school experiences. This is one way of keeping track if they have issues with bullying in school, especially when kids don't always tell their parents these instances.
3) For older children, it might be time to discuss college plans. A study published on Learning Heroes state that at least 75 percent of parents value college education for their children. For this to be achieved, parents should be able to guide their child when it comes to charting their college plans. One way to do this is to spark their interest early. So, if you have a high schooler or a middle school-aged child, organize a trip this summer for colleges within the state. Start a conversation with them about college choices, too.
