Despite the news that UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor will go against undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. soon, UFC president Dana White said that no discussions have been made by both camps. He claimed that Pretty Boy's camp has not reached out to him about it.
Boxing Scene said that there has been no communication from Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe and even the boxer's manager Al Haymon about the possible fight between Mayweather and McGregor. This was despite the name-dropping done by the American fighter who is now hinting at a comeback after he announced his retirement last year.
It was added that Mayweather repeatedly mentioned McGregor's name in interviews as the sole fighter which would make him reconsider fighting again. He retired after beating Andre Berto last September and Manny Pacquiao in May last year. The 39-year-old maintained his undefeated boxing record.
Since McGregor is under contract with the UFC, Boxing Scene said Mayweather would need to inform the MMA-promotion company if he plans to seal a fight with him. However, UFC fans said that mentioning McGregor may just be a strategy for Mayweather to get publicity.
According to The Guardian, McGregor earlier denied that there was a plan for him to fight Mayweather. He claimed that the amount being offered for him is below his cut. "It was him that leaked the rumor and it said he gets $100m and I get $7m - that's a pay cut to me," he added.
McGregor claimed that giving him the said amount is "laughable" since he is also expecting around the same amount that Mayweather want to make. The UFC fighter also compared his achievements at a young age to Mayweather. The 27-year-old fighter said that when Pretty Boy was his age, he was just fighting as an undercard for Oscar De La Hoya.
