Dyslexia is one of the most neglected medical conditions, usually taken for something else. Now, international efforts are taken by organizations to raise awareness and offer early intervention to children with dyslexia.
Tomorrow's Generation
According to WalesOnline, a specialist learning center for children with dyslexia based in Cardiff has joined an international project in helping the early detection of the disorder. Tomorrow's Generation teamed up with a group of scientists from Greece to improve early detection of dyslexia.
Using technology, the group research hopes they could facilitate early diagnosis of dyslexia. The group is trying to come up with a laser eye tracking device and computer software to compare reading patterns of individuals with dyslexia and those who have none.
The pioneering research successfully built a statistical model clearly identifying a dyslexic child from other children. The scientists hope that they would be able to accurately diagnose dyslexia at an early stage and be able to offer timely interventions to help children cope effectively with their condition.
But, What Is Dyslexia?
The Guardian defines dyslexia as a condition where there's difficulty in learning to read, write and spell in spite of adequate intelligence. It's a common condition that affects many processes.
Primarily, dyslexia affects reading skills and some specialists and educators refer them as a "reading disorder" or "reading disability." Though, dyslexia is also known to affect writing, spelling and sometimes speaking.
Students with dyslexia need specific help if they want to cope in school. They may need a different way to process information.
Listening to audiobooks is one way of dealing with it said Understood.com. The Dyslexia Association offers training to teachers that both children and adults can benefit from.
Cutting-Edge Technology
While there are currently various training programmes aimed at teachers, the collaboration of Tomorrow's Generation and Emmetropia Mediterranean Eye Institute in Crete could pave the way for a more effective for specific identification for more effective and efficient intervention."By tracking an individual's reading pathways, we will be able to identify dyslexic children far more easily which will mean they will be able to start intervention strategies at a time when they are going to make the most impact," Dr. Ioannis Aslanides of the Eye Institute said.
