If your son or daughter has just graduated from college, why not nudge him to venture into Pittsburgh? It has been named as the top city for college graduates in the Graduate Opportunity Index based on research from Trulia and LinkedIn.
Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania ranked first, followed by Indianapolis, Kansas, Minneapolis and Columbus. Montgomery Country, Nashville, Philadelphia, Chicago and Cincinnati round up the top 10.
Pittsburgh First in Job Availability For College Graduates
"These metros don't make your headlines everyday about being cosmopolitan cities," said Trulia's chief economist, Ralph McLaughlin, as per CNBC. Still, based on research, the top ranking cities are said to be good choices for college graduates who are just starting out with their careers.
Fortune reported that Trulia combined its housing market data with LinkedIn's employment data to find the rank of cities across America for college graduates. The rankings came from balancing a city's availability of entry-level jobs, housing affordability and the prevalence of recent college graduates.
Pittsburgh ranked 1st on job availability, 8th on housing affordability, and 12th on the presence of other recent college graduates. Recent college graduates were defined as the part of the city's population that is aged 22-30.
College Graduates Must Seek Out Balance
"Recent grads need to balance wages, rents, and job availability, so places like Pittsburgh, Minneapolis, and Philadelphia, fit the bill," Trulia was quoted by 247 Wall Street as saying. The research revealed that Miami and Francisco, which ranked 40th and 31st respectively, had few affordable housing options and few employment opportunities.
Trulia said that recent college graduates may be lured into starting their careers in cities with high wages. Still, cities that offer high wages may have the downside of high rents and low availability of entry level employment.
