New Orleans Pelicans shooting guard Bryce Dejean-Jones was shot dead after he reportedly broke into the wrong apartment on Saturday. He sustained a fatal gunshot wound in his abdomen.
Reuters said the NBA player kicked the door of an apartment in Dallas that awakened the occupant. When the owner called out who was at the door Dejean-Jones reportedly did not respond.
He ended up getting shot by the apartment owner using a handgun when he kicked the bedroom door, a police report cited by Reuters said. He collapsed at the scene and died while being treated at a hospital.
In a similar report, Sky News said Dejean-Jones was actually visiting the apartment of her girlfriend for his daughter's first birthday. The family went out for a walk and the NBA player came back to the unit first.
Wrong apartment floor
Dejean-Jones, however, went to the wrong floor when he went to the apartment. His girlfriend was living was the fourth floor but the 23-year-old basketball player went to the third floor of the building.
"He went to the wrong apartment unfortunately and I think he thought his girlfriend locked him out, so he was knocking on the door, banging on the door, it's locked," Dejean-Jones' agent, Scott Nichols told Sky News. "So one thing led to another."
Investigation underway
According to Reuters, the athlete had an argument with his child's mother before the shooting incident. He reportedly banged on the door because his girlfriend locked him out.
The case is now being investigated by the police if the unit owner was liable for the Dejean-Jones' death. NBA.com said a big consideration in the probe is that it s legal in Texas to make use of a deadly weapon if there is a threat from intruders.
