A mother whose baby was prenatally diagnosed with Down syndrome has written a letter to a doctor who advised abortion, saying that the child was perfect. She had been told her that having a child with Down syndrome would mean a low quality of life.
Courtney Baker started off her letter, a copy of which can be found in Parker Myles.com by comparing her experience and that of her friend's, whose son was also diagnosed with Down syndrome. The prenatal specialist told her friend that her son was perfect.
Daughter With Down Syndrome Touched Many
"While I was so grateful for my friend's experience, it filled me with such sorrow because of what I should have had. I wish you would have been that doctor," Baker said. Baker added that in contrast with what her doctor said about having a low quality of life, their daughter Emersyn has added to their quality of life and touched the hearts of many others.
Baker said in her letter that she was not angry or bitter to the doctor, who News Observer reported that continuously tried convincing her to abort her baby. Baker said she prayed that there will be no other mother who would have to endure what she went through.
"I knew how important it was going to be to write that letter, before Emmy was even born," Baker told ABC News. They reported that Baker mailed the letter with Emersyn's help at the end of May.
Mother Addresses Other Mothers
In a letter she posted on her Facebook page, Baker assured mothers of children diagnosed with Down syndrome that their child "has a grand purpose." She also promised that their children will make their life better.
Baker said that the mother will be able to forget the pain that they are feeling because of the diagnosis and will totally love their child more than they thought they could. She also urged the mothers that after grieving, they should forget what they have been hearing as their child is "absolutely perfect." Baker then went on to share how beautiful her life has been because of her daughter.
