Sony's Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2016 presentation on Monday finally revealed details of what has been known up to now as "God Of War 4." Intriguingly Sony's new "God Of War" shows main character Kratos in the Viking era, himself a father to a son.
Kratos Evolution In 'God Of War'
"God of War" is one of Sony's most lucrative franchises and has been a mainstay of the brand since the latter days of the PlayStation 2. The "God Of War" story centred loosely on the Greek myth of Kratos, son of Zeus and tool of the gods of Olympus.
In the "God Of War" lore, Kratos finds betrayal at the hands of Aries. Kratos then begins a path of bloody revenge against Olympus culminating in a face-off with the gods, and their enemies the Titans for good measure, themselves hence "God Of War." The first thing to notice from the latest iteration of Sony Santa Monica's franchise is the dropping of the number 4 from the title "God Of War" as Gamespot highlights.
This indicates that "God Of War" is not a reboot or just a sequel, but a "re-quel." The new game will follow on from "God Of War 3" but is a new series in its own right.
In "God Of War" Kratos now lives in Norse times (approximately a thousand years after what is known as Ancient Greece), sporting a beard and looking older. Most intriguing of all, as IGN reports, is how "God Of War" shows Kratos with a new family is father figure to his son, Charlie.
'God Of War' Gameplay
The "God Of War" gameplay has also evolved much like Kratos. Gone are the traditional "Devil May Cry" camera system and fighting camera.
Instead "God Of War" goes for an over the shoulder third person perspective and fighting system, not unlike the "Last of Us." The fighting in "God Of War," however, is still visceral and violent, and still unsuitable for children. From the "God Of War" trailer we also see Kratos sporting a new weapon of choice (that fits in with his era in history). We also see skill specific experience being gained, and what looks like a very compelling story in "God Of War."
No release date has been given yet for "God of War," but look for a possible 2017 release. "God Of War" is a PlayStation 4 exclusive.
