We have been led to believe that Mads Mikkelsen's character in the upcoming Marvel offering "Doctor Strange" will be the film's main baddie. In a recent interview, the actor said his role is definitely the rival sorcerer to Benedict Cumberbatch's Dr. Stephen Strange, but that doesn't mean he's a villain.
Mikkelsen's character in the film is a sorcerer who breaks away and forms his own sect, challenging the authority of the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton). Despite those issues, the 50-year-old Danish actor said his character is "a man who believes in something else than the hero," and that he has a different way when it comes to making the world a safer and more beautiful place, Yahoo Movies UK reported. He may be the antagonist, but Mikkelsen believes that the still-unnamed character is "not necessarily wrong."
'Mind-Trip' Action Film
Directed by Scott Derrickson, the movie tells the story of a renowned neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange, who suffers a horrible car accident and loses control of his hands. In his quest to find a cure, he stumbles upon a hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions and seeks the tutelage of the Ancient One to learn about these mysteries.
In the Yahoo interview, Mikkelsen claimed that "Doctor Strange" will be unlike any other films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe because it focuses on a specific universe filled with kung fu, magic and madness -- which is not unlike an "acid trip." Derrickson, meanwhile, said the upcoming movie is "a mind-trip action film," according to Entertainment Weekly.
Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios president and "Doctor Strange" producer, said the flick will feature "scary things" from other dimensions. Swinton's the Ancient One will try to protect Earth from those monsters, a separate report from Entertainment Weekly revealed.
Marvel's Introduction To Magic And Supernatural
"Doctor Strange" will serve as the introduction to Marvel's supernatural and magical side. Scott Adkins, one of the film's stars, said Derrickson is going to insert a horror element into the movie as well. The director previously helmed popular horror flicks including "The Exorcism of Emily Rose," "Sinister" and "Deliver Us from Evil," The Huffington Post reported.
Derrickson recently hinted via Twitter about his attendance to this year's Comic-Con held from July 21 to 24. If this comes to fruition, teasers about "Doctor Strange" should be expected by fans.
"Doctor Strange" also stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong and Rachel McAdams. The film bows in theaters on Nov. 4, 2016. Watch the teaser trailer below.
