‘Gotham’ Season 3 To Feature Characters Based On Hillary Clinton & Donald Trump? Series Exploring U.S. Presidential Election 2016 Parallels

Details about the upcoming third season of Fox's "Gotham" keep piling up as the show nears its comeback to the small screen in the fall. By now, we know about the newcomers, recasts and the Court of Owls villains who will pop up come season three.

'Gotham' Featuring Characters Inspired From Clinton And Trump?

Actor Cory Michael Smith, who portrays forensic scientist Edward Nygma/Riddler on "Gotham," said the series' upcoming season will showcase storylines that are parallel with real-life events in the United States. In an interview with Cinefilos.it (as translated by Comicbook.com), Smith revealed that season three will address this year's U.S. presidential elections -- or at least a semblance of it -- which highlights frontrunner and presumptive Democratic and Republican nominees Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.

"Gotham" may feature an episode that deals with characters inspired from Clinton and Trump. It's also highly possible that the second season's ending (Hugo Strange's reanimated monsters being released into Gotham City) will heavily influence the show's parallel with the country's presidential elections.

Penguin Will Become More Ruthless In Season 3

Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin has suffered major losses over the course of the show's second season. His mother Gertrud was killed by Theo and Tabitha Galavan, he was experimented on by Hugo Strange and he met his long-lost father Elijah shortly before he witnessed his murder.

With all these emotional baggage, Oswald might be ready to take Nygma's advice -- to do whatever he wants now that he has no loved ones holding him back. In an interview with French news site PureBreak (via Comic Book Resources), Oswald actor Robin Lloyd Taylor revealed that the villain will "try to be the most powerful man he can be."

Taylor said Oswald will follow Nygma's advice and "be as ruthless as he wants," the news outlet added. Fans should also expect the two villains to have plenty of scenes together in season three, according to Smith.

Season three will introduce DC Comics' big baddie Mad Hatter/Dr. Jervis Tetch and Vicki Vale, a young and ambitious journalist who is Bruce Wayne's love interest in the comics. "Gotham" development executive producer Stephens confirmed to Comic Book Resources that other villains from the Court of Owls will appear such as the Tweedle Brothers (a.k.a. Dumfree and Deever Tweeds), Talon/WilliamCobb and Solomon Grundy.

Claire Foley, who portrays the young Ivy Pepper, will be recast for a mature version of Poison Ivy, according to TVLine. The character, who manipulates men into doing her bidding by releasing pheromones, will become a full-fledged villain in season three.
