Steven Speilberg Confirms ‘The West Side Story’ Remake, Garners Different Reactions From Fans

For years, rumors of Steven Spielberg wanting to do a remake of the musical movie 'The West Side Story' has been heard all around Hollywood. This time it has been confirmed that it will definitely happen.

Entertainment Weekly reported that it has always been Steven Spielberg's bread project to remake the movie. The said movie that was adapted from the broadway musical took Spielberg 15 years get his hands on the rights to produce it. No cast has yet been announced, but there are already a lot of reactions from all over, some are happy and some aren't excited at all with the idea of a remake. There are those who plead that Spielberg should just let this one go.

Some are expressing their dismay saying that the first movie was already perfect as it has already won 10 Oscars back in 1961. Some happy fans are well, happy! They think it would be awesome if the remake will bring an old material and re-introduce it to the new generation.

We don't really don't know how the remake would mold itself until its in the works of production since Spielberg has not yet done any musical movies. We only know it was am ambition project he's been wanting to have ever since. He has expressed that in his long interview with Hollywood Reporter

It is rather unusual for Spielberg to imbue a passion for musicals. It is an interesting venture for the multi-awarded director taking into consideration that a musical is a different form of art on its own and a great departure from the kind of movies Spielberg is greatly known for. We can only hope that whoever will play to the characters of the remake of 'West Side Story' will bring justice to the old one.

The first movie version of The West Side Story's lead character were played by Richard Beyner and Natalie Wood. They portrayed the star-crossed lovers Tony and Maria, while their singing voices were dubbed by Marni Nixon and Jimmy Bryant. It is a great expectation from fans that in the remake there would be no alternates doing the singing voices of the lead actors but that the actors themselves should be able to sing and act their parts at the same time.

Meanwhile, Spielberg's current movie is going to premier on July 1. Disney's The BFG is a novel adaptation of Roald Dahl's work.
