Who could ever forget the separation of Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon? It became a global news. It feels like it just happened yesterday, but it has actually been a year and a half already since the two broke up. But Nick wants everyone to know that he is not to be blamed for the hold up in their divorce.
The father of two candidly opened up about his new song "Divorce Papers," and said that even though Carey and he are apparently on good terms, but dealing with lawyers is utterly tedious as cited on Genius.
The internationally acclaimed singer also shared the real meaning behind the title of the song, saying that it was his own way of throwing the divorce in everybody's face after all the rumors that he was to blame for the delay in their divorce proceedings according to a news article on People.
"I was like, 'You want Divorce Papers? Well here you go!'" the 35-year-old song writer said. "The lawyer's line was also me releasing a little frustration at the attorneys on both sides because lawyers always think they control the clients and they cause most of the friction, especially since my ex and I get along," Nick added.
Co-parenting their 5-year-old twins, Monroe and Moroccan, is another difficult side effect of the divorce. Nick describes this situation as one of the hardest parts of their divorce. Cannon admits that he obviously lost his composure whenever exchanging the kids with Carey before even though he tries to be strong for them.
"There is nothing more painful than parting with or having to drop your children off," Nick said. "One day as my daughter was giving me a hug goodbye my eyes welled up and she looked at me and said, 'Daddy, why do you have tears in your eyes?' and I told her it was because I love her. She understood. She is a genius. She just hugged me harder and said I love you, too. Waterworks!"
In late 2014, Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon split up and in January 2015 filed for divorce after six years of marriage. Mariah is currently engaged to Australian businessman James Packer.
