"Penny Dreadful" Season 3 served as the series finale of the Showtime series, which came as a surprise to most fans and viewers. A lot of fans of the Eva Green-led series debated that the show could still live on for more seasons even without Vanessa Ives.
As most fans can recall, "Penny Dreadful" Season 3 ended with Vanessa's death. While it is most certainly true that there are a lot of interesting characters in the show with more storylines to explore, Showtime president David Nevins and series creator John Logan explained that the show was always about Vanessa, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"From a writer's perspective, this was always a show about Vanessa Ives for me," said Logan. "That character was the spine of the show."
While "Penny Dreadful" may have come to a conclusion in Season 3, Nevins told the publication that a spinoff series is not entirely out of the question. Nevins said that Logan will be working on other shows for the network for the meantime.
Meanwhile, Yahoo! TV shared what might have unfolded if "Penny Dreadful" Season 3 was renewed for Season 4. According to the publication, the show may focus on Catriona, Sir Malcolm and Ethan.
As seen in the last few episodes of "Penny Dreadful" Season 3, both Sir Malcolm and Ethan felt an attraction towards Catriona. It would also be interesting to see the show introduce more monsters into the story in the spinoff and maybe get some apparitions from Vanessa as well.
