As the Democratic Party initiated a #NoBillNoBreak sit-in at Congress to push for improving gun control laws, Rep. Keith Ellison was holding a meeting in the same building. However, a staff member from his office passed him a note and was told that it came from his mother.
Upon reading the note, Rep. Keith Ellison ended his meeting right then and there, and proceeded to the House floor to join his party mates. It turned out that his mother ordered him to be there. The congressman shared his mother's note on Facebook, telling her not to worry as he is actually taking part.
Rep. Keith Ellison then proceeded to tweet what the situation was at the House floor during the #NoBillNoBreak sit-in. He also got up to deliver a speech urging his fellow congressmen to act on the bill in the aftermath of the Orlando shooting last June 12, which killed 49 people.
Per Mic, Rep. Keith Ellison is the first Muslim-American to hold office in Congress. He assumed the post in 2007 and has since supported bills on LGBT rights, abortion equality, immigration reforms and refugee resettlement.
What Is The #NoBillNoBreak Sit-In?
The #NoBillNoBreak sit-in was initiated by Democrat Rep. John Lewis to force Congress to vote on the legislation for gun control. The politicians have been in discussion about the legislation this week.
But House Speaker Paul Ryan, a Republican, has put Congress on recess until the July 4 holiday without coming to an agreement about the legislation. This pushed the Democrats to orchestrate the sit-in. Rep. Ryan cited the move as a Democrat publicity stunt, per USA Today.
#NoBillNoBreak Sit-In Called Off, But It's Not Over
After 26 hours, the Democrats ended their #NoBillNoBreak sit-in without getting the Republicans to vote on the legislation. But Rep. Lewis said that this is not yet over. The party plans to continue with their actions when Congress reconvenes. "When we come back here we're going to push, pull, stand up," he said, per NBC News.
