Mother Pens Emotional Letter That Goes Viral, Talks About Son With Down Syndrome Not Being Invited to a Birthday Party

A mother has found out that her child was the only one excluded from a birthday party and she took to Facebook to say that she knows that the reason why her son was not invited was because he has Down Syndrome.

The mother, identified as Jennifer Kiss-Engele of British Columbia, has an eight-year-old son with Down Syndrome. Kiss-Engele said that her son frequently mentions the boy who had the birthday party whenever he talks about school and that all other classmates were invited but not him.

She started her letter on Facebook saying that she and the parent of the child who had the birthday party do not know each other very well but her son Sawyer is in the same class as the other mother's child. Kiss-Engele added, "I understand that your child recently delivered birthday invitations to the entire class except to Sawyer, who was not invited. I also understand that this was not an oversight on your part, that it was an intentional decision to not to include my son."

Kiss-Engele continued to say that during the birthday party of her son last year, which was over the Christmas break, they wanted to keep the celebration small so they invited only a few close friends but for the case of the classmate who recently had the birthday party, it was different since all other 22 children were invited and not Sawyer, Huffington Post reported.

The mother of Sawyer also said in her letter that she is sorry that the parent of the other child may not be informed or is scared and uncertain about what it means to have Down Syndrome. She added that she is not mad at the other parent and would rather take the incident as an opportunity to know Sawyer better. She said that having Down Syndrome does not mean that one has no feelings and does not want to have friends. Kiss-Engele added, "People with Down Syndrome want the same things that you and I want."

The parent of the other child reportedly read the letter of Kiss-Engele and she said that her son was invited to a special birthday and that the parents of the child explained what Down Syndrome is.

The letter of Kiss-Engele has received over 20,000 likes on Facebook and other people have commented sharing words of support.
