GoFundMe: How A Viral Story Raised $322,000 For Teen And His Grandmother

One day, Chauncy Jones Black, with an empty stomach, reached the Kroger grocery store in Memphis to offer services to any stranger who would kindly give him a box of donuts in exchange. Three weeks after, the 16-year-old teen has already more than enough money to buy a house and even get him to college in the future.

That day, Matt White, a singer-songwriter, was at the same grocery store doing his errands when Black approached him and asked if he needed help to carry his grocery bags. They ended up shopping for the teen's food who wanted to eat and feed his mother that White would later find out was really Black's 61-year-old grandmother who is sick with diabetes (via The Washington Post).

The Washington Post further narrates that after bonding on food shopping, White took Black home; and the life story of the teen unfolded before his eyes. Chauncy Black's house that he lives in with his grandmother has no furniture to speak of and the refrigerator was clean because there was no food to put inside.

White went home that night, wanting nothing than to help Black and his grandmother. In a GoFundMe page, he aimed to raise money to buy the teen a lawnmower so he can work for his and his grandmother's basic needs.

"Chauncy lives in Memphis with his disabled mother. He is a straight A student who is doing his best to make it in a world with no money and very few resources. He wants to work and help his mother financially. He wants to become a successful business owner and offer jobs and opportunities to others in his community. What so many can take for granted, he wants. He wants food, he wants a bed, he wants to work and he wants a chance," White writes in the GoFundMe page that he titled "Chauncy's Chance."

Simply put, Black wanted to live normally. Nonetheless, because of White's efforts and the attention the teen's story gained from social media, Black did not only get a normal life, he was instantly raised to a privileged status, receiving over $322,000 as of writing.

White is overwhelmed with the support the Blacks are receiving from strangers on the Internet. From $250, he has raised the goal to $325,000.

"Please don't think any of amount of money is too small. Honestly, $5 is plenty. You shouldn't feel you have to give any more than that. I believe there are enough people who care about Chauncy and his cause that with $5 each, we will pass the goal easily," White wrote.

GoFundMe is a popular crowdfunding site that has helped people worldwide. One of its highest-earning campaigns is for four-year old Eliza who has a terminal disease and needs $500,000 dollars for her treatment. The family raised over 2 million dollars instead. Another, the Parent Herald reports, is for the family of Brenda Lee Marquez, an Orlando shooting victim, that has received over $70,000.

To update everyone on Black and his mother's situation, Matt White also posts videos online during and after the page's earnings boomed to a six-digit dollar donation.
