'Penny Dreadful' News & Update: Vanessa Ives' Farewell In Finale Song? 'A Prayer,' A Valentine For Fans?

The "Penny Dreadful" series finale on "Casino Royale" actress Eva Green as Vanessa Ives and "Pear Harbor" star Josh Hartnett as Ethan Chandler left a love song for loyal finals. In the opening credits of "Penny Dreadful" Season 3, creator John Logan allowed Vanessa Ives to signal her goodbye with "A Prayer."

According to TVLine, " A Prayer" was composed by Tony-awardee Tom Kitt and was purposely used by John Logan as the "Penny Dreadful" series finale opened. With "A Prayer," John Logan wanted to allow the "Penny Dreadful" viewers to ease into the end of their journey with Vanessa Ives.

In a manner of speaking, John Logan also used "A Prayer" to assure loyal "Penny Dreadful" viewers that Vanessa Ives finds peace in the episode as she makes her way to heaven. As TVLine puts it, "A Prayer" was a valentine for "Penny Dreadful" fans. "I feel a great sense of responsibility to the fans, because I'm a huge genre fan and I'm a huge horror fan," John Logan said. "And I think we've treated them with affection and respect all the way along."

As IGN reports, the end of Vanessa Ives and of the series with "Penny Dreadful" Season 3 had been a massive surprise. Fans had been fully expecting S4 to bring Vanessa Ives, Ethan Chandler, Sir Malcolm Murray (Tim Dalton) and their merry band of good and evil after the "Penny Dreadful" Season 3 finale.

Parent Herald reports that protests over the shocking end of Vanessa Ives' tale of the series in general have now led to petitions for a "Penny Dreadful" spinoff. An early favorite are "Penny Dreadful" characters Catriona Hartdegen (Perdita Weeks) and Dracula.

Eva Green, Josh Hartnett and Timothy Dalton bowed out of "Penny Dreadful" with fellow series mainstays Rory Kinnear, Harry Treadaway, Billie Piper and Reeve Carney. And now, the long wait for that Catriona-Dracula "Penny Dreadful" spinoff.
