An incident during an end-of-the-year party for third graders at William P. Tatem Elementary School concerning brownies has caused cops with guns being called in the area to settle the matter.
In a report by Restoring Liberty, New Jersey officials said that they were called after a nine-year-old boy commented on the brownies that were being served at the class party. One student heard the boy and his comments and regarded it as a racists comment causing the local authorities to be called.
The boy's mother, Stacy dos Santos, said that police officers talked to her son adding that the school overreacted about the comments of the boy. The boy reportedly made comments about the brownies and not the skin color of a person. Dos Santos added, "He said they were talking about brownies ... Who exactly did he offend? There was a police officer with a gun in the holster talking to my son, saying, 'Tell me what you said.' He didn't have anybody on his side."
It has not been released what exactly were the boy's remarks but the mother felt like there was nothing racist about it. The boy was said to have been traumatized and that he stayed at home during the last day of school. Collingswood Police Department said in a statement that they have referred the case to the New Jersey Division of Child Protection and Permanency.
Accordingly, the decision to call police officials to resolve the matter was made due to the order of the Camden County Prosecutor's Office, which has started back in May. The order says that minor incidents such as name-calling should be reported to officials. This order was issued because the district failed to alert police officials on allegations of a potential criminal conduct. However, since the order was issued, officials have been called to schools in the area as many as five times per day.
The mother of the child involved in the brownie incident said that she hopes she could transfer her son to another school as she has lost faith in the district. The incident on top of the order has also outraged other parents saying that police officials are being called into classrooms too frequently.
Dos Santos is asking for an apology from the school noting that her son deserves it as he was intimidated. The school has not issued any comment regarding the matter yet.
