With the children enjoying their summer by cooling off in the beach or pool, water safety is of utmost concern for parents. Though a well-managed resort or the public beach is expected to have lifeguards to watch over the swimmers, one can never be too sure. Sometimes the water becomes too crowded, making it difficult to spot a person struggling in it.
Fortunately, there is a wearable device that can help appease parents' worries that their child could drown in the beach or pool. Called the SEAL Swim Safe, the equipment was originally hatched as a "first-ever portable swim monitoring and drowning detection system" via a crowdsourcing effort in IndieGogo in 2013.
The SEAL Swim Safe has a band that is worn on the neck, which sends off signals into a hub. If a child is submerged in the water far too long, the hub will sound off to let the parents know that something could be wrong.
The SEAL Swim Safe alarm can be set and adjusted for different swimmers of the family, depending on their swim levels. But even expert swimmers can also benefit from wearing the band, if only to give moms and dads some peace of mind. The device is portable and lightweight, so that it can be ideally be brought during trips. The signal from the hub can bounce off up for "several hundred feet," per Amazon.
Gizmodo reports that the SEAL Swim Safe is already being used at different YMCA centers across the United States. The site also attests the band or collar is not a choking hazard. It has been properly designed with an easy-snap off clip when not in use. The band also comes in appealing colors and it's light to wear around the neck, so that kids won't have to be self-conscious when they have it on.
