Smart Baby Crib: Updated Patent Application Filed, Device To Be Full Of Sensors

A smart crib might not be far off in the market, as a company filed an updated patent application for it recently. Nest, a company under Google's Alphabet, filed the application in the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office last June 30.

The patent is for a crib with embedded smart sensors. Possible components of the smart crib are a camera and microphone connected via Wi-Fi and sensors for humidity, light, air, pressure and temperature in a baby's room, according to a report from Digital Trends.

A Triple Edged Smart Crib

The updated patent for the smart crib was filed by Maxime Veron. Veron is Nest's director of product management and hardware marketing. Recode said that in the patent application, Nest pointed out that infant beds are often bought in three parts namely a crib, a mattress and a baby monitor. Nest's proposed smart crib would combine all three components.

According to the patent application, the smart crib will also have an entertainment device. This entertainment device may be a projector, a speaker or an LED. The smart crib would also be able to look into a baby's pattern of behavior and consequently respond through the entertainment device.

Cribs In The Market

Digital Trends said that the smart crib is possibly nearing a release date within the next year, though Nest has yet to announce when the smart crib will be available in the market. Current prices for cribs are said to range from $100 to $2,000.

The original patent application for the smart crib was filed way back in December 2014, according to Recode. Online baby products, which include cribs, reportedly amounted to a sales of $5 billion growing by 11 percent.
