The latest on Microsoft's Windows 10 is all about the software's introduction to smartphones. As announced by Terry Myerson of Microsoft on January 21, Windows 10 previews for smartphones will come out this February, states TechRadar.
According to CNet, there have been a couple of tweets concerning Microsoft's Windows 10 for phones. The tweets were sent out by the Vice President of Microsoft's Operating Systems Group, Joe Belfiore. In the first tweet, Belfiore says little about Windows 10 for phone with only 512 MB of RAM. He tweets, "Hey all: We ARE working on a Win10 for 512MB, including 520. Our ambition is to make #Win10 available for these devices but features may vary, including 520."
This tweet was probably sent out because of the complaints from phone owners whose 512MB phones use the company's mobile OS. Phone owners who have 512MB phones say that Windows Phone apps and features do not run on their devices because of the lack of memory.
In his second tweet, Belfiore told the public that Win10 will only be availabe for certain phones for the initial release of the Phone Insider Program. The Phone Insider Program is an extension of the Windows Insider program. Windows Insider lets users beta test Windows 10 for computers. Microsoft encourges anyone who uses Windows Insider to send feedback on the program through a special appthat allows them to rate the program and leave notes for the Windows development team.
Phone Insider, on the other hand, is for users to test the Windows Phone OS. The same concept is applied to this program as with Windows Insider.
Belfiore's second tweet reads: "Timing for various phones may be variable as well. When we first launch insider program, it'll be a subset of phone with more coming later."
Windows Central says that the the program is currently being tested on the HTC One (M8), Lumia 1020, and the Luma 1520. The reports adds that the first Windows 10 preview will most likely be for newer more highend phones, like the Lumia 830 or the Lumia 930.
In Belfiore's third tweet, he confirms that the technical preview - or what he calls the "insider build" - for mobile Win10 will still be released this month. He tweets: "Also, we're on track for Insider Build coming 'in Feb' as Terry said at our 1/21 event. We need to complete internal testing 1st, hang in!"
Microsoft obviously wants to get rid of as many bugs as possible before the release of the technical preview. Ironing out the bugs will not be an easy task, however, since there were already problems with Windows 10 build 12492, reported CNet. A source from Microsoft told Neowin that Microsoft insiders, who were supposed to test build 12492, were not able to upgrade their devices.
Microsoft certainly seems to be putting in a lot of elbow grease on Windows 10 for phones. The extra work is probably so that more people will be atrracted to Microsoft's mobile OS, which did not do well in 2014. Windows Phone lagged behind Apple iOS and Android in the worldwide market for smartphones last year, hovering at 3 percent, reports Cnet.com.
With the release of Windows 10, Microsoft hopes to run all Windows-powered devices - phones, tablets, laptops, and desktops - on a single platform.
