A poor home environment in a high poverty neighborhood could be a recipe for a health disaster according to multiple studies. People from low-income neighborhoods usually struggle to find ways to lead a healthy lifestyle, let along have enough of a budget for good housing. Good health and good housing could be correlated to one another, which is why an organization known as SBH Health System is trying their best to provide poverty-stricken families in the Bronx with the latter.
According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, SBH Health System has partnered up with multiple organizations in order to develop a housing complex that will reportedly be 450,000 square feet in area. This complex is designed to help reduce the adverse effects of subpar housing on the possibilities of healthy living.
Experts argue that there are a lot of factors that contribute to a healthy home, says an article from Stuff.co.nz. Among these factors are insulation, heating, and ventilation. And while the benefits that these things bring are priceless, the factors themselves are quite pricy to begin with.
Homes without insulation, heating, and ventilation could prove to be the perfect breeding ground for mold and mildew, which may be detrimental to a person's health. Constant exposure to these can also worsen a preexisting medical condition, especially respiratory problems. "A warm, dry home is essential for maintaining good health," says Tony Sandes, the managing director of DVS Home Ventilation in New Zealand. "Good ventilation is essential for maintaining air quality and is especially important in a house that's fully insulated," Sandes adds.
Having these factors in a home may also be more economically friendly in the long run. You can save money on heating costs by investing in these things and the money you can save can be reimbursed into other things such as healthcare for you and your family.
