When a baby is born to the world, the parents automatically take their posts as the guardians. They decide everything for the newborn, from the clothes the baby will wear to the diet plan he/she will follow. Unfortunately, some parents make wrong decisions and this Italian pair wrongly fed their 14-month-old son with a vegan diet that left him malnourished.
The Telegraph reports than even after more than a year of existence, the Italian baby boy weighs just slightly above the normal weight of a newborn, clearly an indication that he's malnourished. His grandparents took him to the hospital and after a series of blood tests, found that the baby boy had low calcium and iron levels a baby his age needs. Because of this, he also developed a congenital heart condition.
According to The Telegraph, the hospital did not only perform an emergency surgery in response to the boy's situation; its staff also called the police to report the case of a diet gone wrong and has left a hopeless baby, malnourished. An inquiry was opened and eventually, the parents lost custody of the baby.
The Telegraph says that this is not the first time Italian parents lost custody for raising a malnourished kid. For the past eighteen months, four children and a toddler had already been hospitalized because of malnourishment.
As per Fox News, if parents want to feed their children with a vegan diet, they must consult a dietitian first. A vegan diet must be supplemented with Vitamins B12, D, calcium and iron is a must for a baby's survival.
Once the kid is old enough, he/she would somehow have the liberty to choose his/her food. If eventually he/she chooses to be vegan, NursingDegree.net narrates the health benefits of eating more greens than meat. Vegan food has potassium, antioxidants, Vitamin C and Vitamin E. It helps prevent cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and cancer, lowers cholesterol and maintains normal blood pressure.
