Gay and bisexual mean have the most numbers of people infected with AIDS and now an HIV pill called Truvada will reportedly help lower the number of cases. Reports claim that the number of HIV infections will be dropping in the next 10 years if men will be given the drug.
FOX News reported that the new research claims the drug can protect gay and bisexual men from being infected with the virus. However, men who can attain the drug should meet at least one of the three criteria.
The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said that gay and bisexual men eligible for the pill should have had unprotected anal sex in a monogamous relationship with a person who has not been tested for HIV. Another criterion is that the people should have unprotected anal sex with a partner, who is not in a monogamous relationship. The last criterion is that people eligible for the pill should have engaged in anal sex with someone who has tested positive for HIV.
Truvada is said to be the pill and is manufactured by Gilead and as per the research, if at least 40 percent of the gay and bisexual population would have access to the pill, around 1,162 people out of 100,000 gay and bisexual men will be able to avoid the virus in the next 10 years. It is also called PrEP and it stands for pre-exposure prophylaxis.
The pill is said to be made from two antiretroviral drugs that have been combined. Both drugs keep the HIV virus from causing any problem. The drug has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Samuel Jenness, the study's lead author from Emory University in Atlanta, said in a statement that only 5 to 10 percent of gay and bisexual mean have access to the drug now. They also need to deliver counselling to men who want to have their hands on the HIV pill and let them know that it should be taken every day in order for it to take full effect.
