Zyban brings in dramatic help for both baby and mommy during pregnancy, study says.
News Medical magazine features the study conducted by Dr. Anick Bérard, Professor and Fonds de recherche du Québec , where the use of nicotine patches or the drug Zyban was concluded to have positive effects for the unborn child while allowing pregnant women to stop smoking during and after pregnancy.
The study published in American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology showed that in 80% of cases for women who used nicotine patches or the drug Zyban was successful at quitting smoking. After stopping, 60% of Zyban users and 68% of women using nicotine patches did not smoke again from labor day and on.
Zyban, though it is known to have dramatic benefits for smoking moms, should be used cautiously as it has risks of severe reactions. Zyban may cause seizures, particularly in moms who have certain medical conditions, which have to be known by the doctor before taking it in. Some of the conditions that you may give negative reaction to Zyban are the following:
- history of head injury, seizures, or brain or spinal cord tumor;
- narrow-angle glaucoma;
- heart disease, high blood pressure, history of heart attack;
- diabetes;
- kidney or liver disease (especially cirrhosis); or
- bipolar disorder (manic depression).
Drugs.com says that "FDA pregnancy category C. It is not known whether Zyban will harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while using this medicine."
Depending on the case then, Zyban can be of great help or may lead to huge terror in pregnancy. This drug can reduce the risk of premature birth and low birth weight on top of the success at quitting at smoking. However, the baby can have defects if not used carefully and cautiously.
