Menopause can actually be reversed, according to a team of researchers. The researchers are claiming that the use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) can stimulate ovaries of women in their menopausal stage to produce eggs.
"It offers a window of hope that menopausal women will be able to get pregnant using their own genetic material," said gynecologist Konstantinos Sfakianoudis, as per New Scientist. Sfakianoudis works at the Greek fertility clinic Genesis Athens. His team reportedly found that PRP can rejuvenate older ovaries.
Menopause Reversal In 40-year-old Woman
The Sun reported that Sfakianoudis was able to do the experimental treatment using PRP to a 40-year-old woman who had menopause when she was 35. Six months after being treated with PRP, the woman menstruated again. According to the report, PRP is believed to generate growth in bones and muscles.
Sfakianoudis and his team were then able to collect eggs produced from the 40-year-old woman and fertilized these using her husband's sperm, the report added. The eggs will eventually be implanted in the previously menopausal woman's womb in the following months.
New Treatment Works In Two-Thirds Of Cases
According to a report from Mirror, 30 other women underwent the same treatment using PRP and it had apparently worked two-thirds of the time. Roger Sturmey at Hull York Medical School in the United Kingdom was quoted as saying that the discovery is "potentially quite exciting" but raises ethical questions on how old mothers should be.
New Scientist reported that there are concerns on the safety and effectiveness of using PRP as their have not been prior animal testing. Sturmey being quoted as saying that an experiment of this nature would have been prohibited in the United Kingdom. Sfakianoudis and his team discussed some their findings at the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology annual meeting this month.
