The "Wayward Pines" series based on the trilogy of the same title by executive producer Blake Crouch, is poised to take the tale in to Season 3. However, where "Wayward Pines" Season 2 went into a rather bleak direction of exploring extinction, evolution seems the game in S3.
Entertainment Weekly cites an interview with Blake Crouch on the implications of "Wayward Pines" Season 2. Rather than the suspense that CJ Mitchum (Djimon Hounsou) built up at "Wayward Pines" Season 2 by almost terminating all the humans, an Abbie cradling a human baby left the more lasting impression.
A less obvious scene in the "Wayward Pines" Season 2 finale seems to point to the same message. Outside of CJ's greenhouse, the camera caught a plant growing from the supposedly barren soil as the "Wayward Pines" Season 2 finale closed.
While official confirmation by FOX on "Wayward Pines" Season 3 has yet to be made, Blake Crouch and co-executive producer M. Night Shyamalan are ready for the future. Whereas S2 largely explored human extinction or the extinction of a species that has self-awareness, "Wayward Pines" Season 3 moves forward with evolution.
"What are those final hours, what are those final moments like?" Blake Crouch highlights for the "Wayward Pines" Season 3 direction. "It's a bunch of really profound philosophical questions just about the nature of being, and so that's the space we could play in."
Certainly, Blake Crouch is happy to extend his trilogy into further into the "Wayward Pines" universe. When the series returns for "Wayward Pines" Season 3, Blake Crouch told Entertainment Weekly that some of the characters from S2 could return and new characters may also surface.
Bustle recalls that if "Wayward Pines" Season 3 happens, this will be the last season for this Blake Crouch and M. Night Shyamalan tandem. Following the patterns for S1 and S2 the "Wayward Pines" Season 3 premiere date could air in May 2017.
