Charter schools are not the favorite of many and is often the subject of criticism. Just last month, a historic organization declared its staunch disapproval and called for a ban on the expansion of privately managed charters.
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) has recently concluded its annual national convention, and not without leaving people something to talk about. It voted for a drafted resolution that included calling for a moratorium on the planned expansion of privately managed charter schools (via The Washington Post).
The 74 reported that NAACP has been calling for reforms of charter schools since 2010. In 2010, the organization declared its disdain of the "emphasis on charter schools" and in 2014, it announced its opposition on the "privatization of public schools."
In the 2016 resolutions, NAACP took a much straightforward approach on criticizing charter schools. It targeted charters making decisions on public fund spending when they do not represent the public, segregating the public school system more, violating protection of student rights for public schooling, and seemingly corrupting money with missing funds on reports. It enumerated the problems of charter schools and why a lot of changes have to be done for these schools to champion quality education for all children as they promised.
Ultimately, NAACP is concerned with how public funds are spent and that a public charter school should support free, quality public education for all children if it maintains its "public" status. Thus, privately owned charter or for-profit charter schools should be stopped from growing further.
As per The Washington Post, 2,200 members of NAACP voted for the passing of the resolution. However, for it to be official, NAACP's national board must hold a meeting to talk about its approval.
According to NAACP's official site, the organization represents ethnic minorities in the United States. Its mission is "to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate race-based discrimination."
