Both the Sacramento Kings and its small forward, Rudy Gay, are onboard in the latter's potential trade to other teams. Multiple teams are reportedly interested in acquiring Gay, with the Houston Rockets the most recent among them.
Gay is owed $13.333 million this NBA season and has a player option in 2017-18 worth $14.2 million. According to Steve Kyler of Basketball Insiders, the Kings "would have to take back some level of salary in the deal and find a team open to taking on Gay in what could be a one-year rental." League insiders, however, claimed that "getting anything of real value back on what could be a one-year rental at Gay's price tag" is difficult.
Sources also believe that the Kings are not looking for a huge return in trading the 28-year-old Gay. With this, the team could search for a trade deal a bit easier despite all the issues that an agreement entails.
Sactown Royalty wrote that the Kings could ask the Rockets for Patrick Beverley in return for Gay seeing as they have expressed interest in the point guard before. Also, Beverley doesn't really fit new Rockets' coach Mike D'Antoni's system, which requires every player to be versatile just like James Harden. With Harden leading the team, the Rockets could afford to lose Beverley and add Gay's skills to its lineup.
Prior to this Rockets talk, Gay has expressed his desire to be traded to the Miami Heat. However, it appears that the Heat is scarce in tradable assets in exchange for Gay, not to mention the issues that surround his $14.2 million player option for the NBA 2017-18 season. It should be noted as well that players signed in free agency this month are not available for trading until December 15, The Miami Herald reported.
The Heat doesn't have many tradable players that will meet Gay's contract. The only players that the team could give to the Kings are Josh McRoberts, Josh Richardson, and Udonis Haslem, CBS Sports listed.
Gay averaged 17.2 points and 6.5 rebounds per game last NBA season. Other teams reportedly interested in signing Gay are the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Chicago Bulls.
The Bulls could trade Taj Gibson and Tony Snell for Gay. The Timberwolves, on the other hand, could use Ricky Rubio, a point guard that the Kings would greatly benefit from, The Inquisitr reported.
