"The Vampire Diaries" Season 8 is confirmed to be the show's last on TV, which means that Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev will be reuniting after the actress left the series in Season 6. There is a possibility, however, that Dobrev will not be returning to the show as her iconic character, Elena Gilbert.
In a recent interview with Julie Plec, the executive producer told TV Line that Sarah Salvatore will be back in "TVD" Season 8. Plec teased that her return has something to do with the villain, which led to speculations that the villain will take on the appearance of Sarah before changing to another character.
There have been reports before that Dobrev may return in "The Vampire Diaries" Season 8 as the villain instead. As most fans can recall, Dobrev's voice was heard during the Season 7 finale, which is why Damon was lured into entering the vault.
Hypable also notes that Dobrev may not return to "The Vampire Diaries" Season 8 as Elena unless Bonnie (Kat Graham) dies because of a spell that the former received from Kai. This means that either Bonnie will die before the season finale or Dobrev will return as a completely different character.
There is also a possibility that Dobrev will return in "The Vampire Diaries" Season 8 as Elena. The publication notes that The CW series may ultimately choose to turn Bonnie into a vampire in order to allow Elena to wake up from her sleep.
