When "House of Cards" Season 5 runs on Netflix in 2017, it will be without one familiar character. Actor Mahershala Ali, who plays Remy Danton in the show, confirms that he's no longer going to be in the new season, and it has been something that was settled a long time ago.
Speaking with GQ, Mahershala Ali said that he's already done playing Remy Danton in "House of Cards." His reason for leaving the Emmy-nominated show is more of a career move than anything.
"There's only so much space for you to stretch and develop and grow because there are so many characters," he said in the interview. He also mentioned that he didn't talk about his departure from "House of Cards," even if he has already determined that it was time to leave the series.
Though he considers Remy Danton the breakthrough role of his career and "House of Cards" opened the doors for him for movies, he's shifting to doing other projects this time. The actor is going to be seen in "Luke Cage" next, which begins streaming this September on Netflix. He plays the villain Cottonmouth in the series.
Meanwhile, Mike Kelly, who plays Doug Stamper in "House of Cards," revealed that he loved watching Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) fail in Season 4. He told The Wrap that then showrunner Beau Willimon had this idea early on, "just to see what happens." The storyline felt like "House of Cards" was back in its original form from Season 1, which Kelly knew the viewers also appreciated.
It's still unclear how "House of Cards" Season 5 will play out once it returns, but there have been unverified reports about betrayal and death between the first couple. The series is expected to arrive on Netflix with new episodes in the spring of 2017.
