Sleep plays an important role in keeping a person fit and fine. During pregnancy it is difficult to find a comfortable sleeping position and a sound sleep is essential for a healthy pregnancy and baby.
A study published in Obstetrics & Gynecology recently found that sleep apnea during pregnancy leads to many complications like preeclampsia and cesarean birth.
According to health experts, sleep on side or SOS is the best sleeping position during pregnancy. However, they specify sleeping on the left side as it helps the mother to increase the blood flow to the baby and increase the amount of the nutrients the baby gets. Pregnant women are warned against sleeping on the back. According to a study conducted by a team of Australian researchers, sleeping on one's back during pregnancy can increase the risks of miscarriage and stillbirth.
Following are some sleep tips from the National Sleep Foundation for pregnant women to ensure a safe and trouble-free pregnancy.
* From the third trimester, try to sleep on left side and avoid lying on back for a long time
* Pregnant women should take lots of fluids during the day, but should reduce fluid intake before retiring to bed
* Do not consume food that is too spicy, fried or that can cause acidity. These precautions will help in avoiding heartburn. Keeping the head in a raised position while sleeping will help to solve heartburn
* Spare a few minutes every day for physical activity or exercise
* Take snacks like crackers frequently during the day to prevent nausea
* Special pregnancy mattresses or pillows can also provide comfort and sound sleep
* Support the body with regular pillows
* Take naps
