Actress Rita Wilson, 58, whose recent cancer scare has led to her double mastectomy last April, expressed appreciation for her husband, Tom Hanks, during this most trying time.
The couple, who have been married since 1988, has weathered through this health crisis together. In an interview with New York Times, the actress revealed that it was her husband who had been by her side all the way before and after she had both her breasts removed to curb the spread of cancer. They laughed and cried together and spent her downtimes from work watching movies.
"Who knew it would make you even closer?" the actress said in the interview. "You never know how your spouse is going to react in a situation like this. I was so amazed, so blown away by the care my husband gave me," she added, noting how they never had to deal with serious health issues before.
Wilson also commented on how her kids were present after her surgery. They came to visit her with flowers and treats. The actress has two grown children with Hanks, named Chester and Truman, while she is stepmother to two of Hanks' other adult kids from a previous marriage, Colin and Elizabeth. The actress calls this past events the most "normal and intimate time" with her family.
As she was working in the play "Fish in the Dark" with Larry David when she learned of her cancer, Wilson pushed for a second opinion from the doctors. An earlier test revealed she was negative for the disease but she trusted her gut feeling and got another round of tests done. Her cancer was caught early, so there was no need for her to undergo chemotherapy and radiation therapy. A month after her surgery, she returned to work on Broadway after going on a health break, according to Daily Mail.
However, the actress remarked that she's still quite exhausted and reeling from the effects of her surgery. She jokes that having fake boobs would definitely look awesome at her age but Wilson is reportedly still using a tissue expander on her chest.
Hanks has never publicly spoken about his wife's ordeal but the actor only returned to work on a movie recently as well. While filming on location in Italy, Hanks actually called up Wilson for a Facetime chat while her interview with New York Times was taking place. He had been checking up on her, proving that he's always been the supportive husband his wife proudly tells the world about.
