‘Penny Dreadful’ Spinoff, Season 4 Renewal: Showtime Execs Explain Reason Behind Cancellation

"Penny Dreadful" surprised everyone when the show dropped the words "The End" in the Season 3 finale, which also served as the conclusion to the Eva Green-led series. While many fans think that the reason behind the cancellation is the show's ratings, Showtime executives recently explained the real reason behind the ending of the series. Can a spinoff / Season 4 still happen?

"Penny Dreadful" Season 3 served as a conclusion to the story of Vanessa Ives (Eva Green), which showed her death and ultimately, the end of her suffering. Many fans were disappointed that Showtime did not announce the show's cancellation prior to the series finale and, instead, shocked them at the end.

Fans also thought that "Penny Dreadful" Season 3 should not have ended despite Vanessa's death in the Season 3 finale. Many lobbied that there were other characters on the show and the drama may explore their characters' stories through Season 4.

In an interview with Showtime programming president Gary Levine, it was revealed that "Penny Dreadful" Season 3 was canceled because it was a three-season arc since it was created, notes Digital Spy. This puts to rest rumors that the show was given the ax due to its ratings.

However, there have also been reports that a "Penny Dreadful" spinoff may happen or that "Penny Dreadful" Season 4 can happen in another network. This appears to be out of the picture as of the moment since series creator John Logan told Entertainment Weekly that the show has always been about Vanessa Ives.

Without Vanessa, "Penny Dreadful" Season 4 is highly unlikely to happen on Showtime or any other network for that matter. A spinoff, however, may still be possible since it could live on even without Vanessa in it.
