Artificial Intelligence Vs. Cancer: How Can AI Help Doctors In Breast Cancer Diagnosis?

Even though skeptics have warned about the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) to humanity, AI's significance, benefits and usefulness in the various fields of sciences have continued to grow. As a matter of fact, a team of researchers at Houston Methodist have created an AI-driven software to assist medical experts in breast cancer diagnosis.

In a study published in the journal Cancer, Houston Methodist Research Institute experts revealed that the artificial intelligence-based software can reliably interpret mammograms for a fast and precise prediction of breast cancer risk. The AI-driven software can also reportedly translate patient charts into diagnostic information at a very quick speed that is 30 times faster than a human doctor but can still be 99 percent accurate.

According to Science Daily, Houston Methodist Research Institute's Department of Systems Medicine chairman Stephen T. Wong explained that the artificial intelligence software has also the ability to reduce unnecessary biopsies by determining breast cancer risk more efficiently. As the AI-based software scanned patient charts, diagnostic features such as tumor proteins and correlated mammogram findings with breast cancer subtype, doctors can accurately predict the likelihood for a breast cancer diagnosis of a patient.

With this latest artificial intelligence software, researchers hope that it will assist physicians better when it comes to breast cancer diagnosis. Wong also stressed that accurate review of many charts in just a matter of few hours won't be made impossible without the innovative technology of artificial intelligence, Wired noted.

Meanwhile, 12.1 million mammograms and more than 1.6 million breast biopsies are performed in the United States yearly. Unfortunately, 20 percent are performed needlessly, all thanks to the false-positive mammogram results of cancer free breasts but with this new artificial intelligence software, these occurrences could finally be lessened if not fully eliminated, NDTV revealed.

In other artificial intelligence news, the first ever beauty competition judged by AI has recently revealed the winners. Sadly, Observer has observed that there were no diversity among the winners and not a single person of color was hailed as a winner but Insilico Medicine CEO and Youth Laboratories CSA Alex Zhavoronkov explained that some technical limitations are responsible for the lack of diversity in the results.
