'El Chapo Guzman' News Update: What's the Trade for His Son's Life?

“El Chapo” Guzman may have been arrested in January, but his drug cartel is still going strong. As of the latest update on the Guzman family, El Chapo’s son, Jesus Alfredo Guzman, along with five of his men were said to be kidnapped by another gang.

The gang who kidnapped “El Chapo’s” son is said to be the ones from the Jailsco New Generation Cartel, which is also one of the biggest drug group in Mexico. Though CJNG gang members were said to be the brains behind the kidnapping, it was mentioned that the Jailsco New Generation Cartel is affiliated with the Guzman family that allegedly help “El Chapo” plan his escape.

To explain their affiliation, it was mentioned in Business Insider that Guzman’s lawyer, along with the CJNG gang members communicated constantly. It was mentioned that their communication was entirely for business purposes as they discussed the honorarium for El Chapo’s legal team.

Their communication was said to be purely business and focused on El Chapo’s legal team as there are no additional links given between the CJNG and Guzman’s team. What sparked speculations however is the fact that the CJNG and Sinaloa drug cartel may be business affiliates as they are two of the biggest drug cartels in Mexico.

“It’s the fastest expanding cartel,” Mark Vigil the former head of the DEA describes CJNG. “and they could in the near future overtake the Sinaloa cartel as the most significant organized group in Mexico.”

One of the factors being looked upon in regards to Jesus Alfredo Guzman kidnapping is said to be affiliated to drug trades. Mexican authorities mentioned that the kidnapping of El Chapo’s son could possibly mean that the CJNG are in for a bigger drug trafficking operation. CBS News then added that Jesus Alfredo Guzman may have made a bold move as he entered the CJNG territory without having bodyguards.

It’s a grave error that is going to cost them a lot, either in life or in a very costly negotiation,” said Guillermo Valdes, former director of Mexico’s intelligence services stated. “If you’re in a fight with these gentlemen of the Jalisco New Generation, you don’t go to their territory without bodyguards.”
