‘Criminal Minds’ Season 12 Cast & Spoilers: Emily Prentiss Promoted As BAU Leader? Paget Brewster’s Temporary Return Becomes Regular

Thomas Gibson's sudden firing last month has resulted in major shakeup in "Criminal Minds" Season 12. Paget Brewster, who was supposed to return only for a temporary arc, has been upped to a full-time role. Is Emily Prentiss going to be Aaron Hotchner's replacement as BAU team leader?

Page Brewster was scheduled to return as SSA Emily Prentiss for a temporary arc, but a CBS rep has confirmed that this has changed into a full-time return, TVLine reported. "We're all so excited to have Paget with us full time," executive producer Erica Messer said in a statement. "The BAU family has definitely missed her, on screen and off. Having her back on set has been great, it's like she never left." Brewster's first appearance would be on Oct. 12 episode.

Following Gibson's exit, "Criminal Minds" has been planning to add two series regulars, one of which is slated to be the new team leader. There is no confirmation yet if Prentiss takes the position. Zap2it suggests that Prentiss' time with the Interpol might have given her some relevant leadership skills and experiences that would make her a better fit for the position Hotchner left.

It is not yet clear how Hotch will be written off in "Criminal Minds" after his abrupt dismissal. It could be that he will meet his end during the special assignment he will be sent to. Given Hotchner's unexpected absence, Prentiss might be drawn in as officer in charge, and if she nails the job, then might have it permanently.

Recent "Criminal Minds" cast changes include the addition of Adam Rodriguez as series regular. He is going to play Luke Alvez. Aisha Tyler, who plays Dr. Tara Lewis, has also been promoted to series regular. "General Hospital" star Matt Cohen has also been cast for a recurring role as Jack Garrett's son, Ryan. He wants to follow his father's footsteps by being a top FBI agent.

"Criminal Minds" Season 12 is scheduled to premiere on Sept. 28.
