Inside ‘The Get Down,’ a Brand New Musical Drama From Netflix

A brand new Netflix original show called "The Get Down," was recently released in early August, and after six episodes in, the latest musical drama series from Netflix has been one of the most talked about shows today.

The Netflix original "The Get Down" focuses on a group of young teenagers who make their way through the mean streets of South Bronx, New York in the 1970's. In a city that's been left on the verge of bankruptcy, the young group led by Ezekiel "Zeke" Figuero, attempts to put his own mark on the music scene of the broken down city, giving birth to hip-hop, and changing the world forever.

"The Get Down" is produced by award-winning director Baz Luhrmann and hip-hop legend Nas. According to Rolling Stone, Luhrmann says that the show doesn't show the birth of hip-hop, but moments before that, when disco was crashing down and hip-hop was slowly on the rise.

Nas, who is one of the most prominent names in the hip-hop world, serves as a mentor to the young cast of "The Get Down", along with other "founding fathers" of hip-hop teaches kids about rap in the early days, giving them pointers on how to rhyme, to how to properly hold a microphone

"The Get Down" features a young ensemble cast with Justice Smith playing "Zeke," Shameik Moore as "Shaolin Fantastic," and Jaden Smith as "Dizzee," in the lead roles.

There has been much anticipation surrounding the "The Get Down," and halfway through the season, it has been met with great reviews, despite a few holes in the story. Variety calls the show "a beautiful mess,a flawed show interspersed with moments of remarkable brilliance." The show currently holds an 8.6/10 rating on IMDB

With a $120 million dollar budget, "The Get Down" is one of Netflix's most expensive projects to date, and so far, it has not been disappointing. The web-series will feature a total of 12 episodes in its first season.
