Singer Kris Allen and wife Katy O'Connell are expanding their family. The 27-year-old broke the news while undergoing treatment in a hospital after a car accident on Jan. 1.
"Thank you @ford for equipping me with a car that kept my whole family @katyallen @ZorroPup and the little one we have on the way safe," he Tweeted. (Zorro is Allen's French bulldog). "Yes I got in a really bad wreck tonight and yes I'm having a lil baby. #gonnabeadaddy."
This is the first child for the couple, who started dating in high school and tied the knot in 2008.
Later, Allen's mother Kimberly took to Twitter, urging well-wishers to pray for her son and daughter-in-law.
"Kristopher and Katy are both pretty beat up but ALIVE! Thank you Jesus! They are setting his arm now and will have surgery tomorrow," she wrote. "Zorro is fine too! Very shook up, but not injured."
Even though Allen's wrist was broken and he will not be able to play the guitar for a while, he assured fans that his condition will not affect the "Out Alive" tour that is scheduled to begin next week.
Messages from well-wishers started pouring in shortly after the expecting singer announced the baby news.
"@KrisAllen I'm super duper glad that u, @katyallen & @zorropup r safe & sound & congrats so happy for u I know you'll b a wonderful daddy :D," one of the 293,464 followers wrote, while another one added, "@KrisAllen so scary about the car wreck. Thankfully you are ok! And congrats on being a Dad soon!!! Exciting :)"
Allen, who discontinued his college studies to concentrate on his musical career, shot to fame by becoming the "American Idol" season eight winner in 2009.
