Brendan Dassey's case has hit a snag. One of the main personalities featured in "Making a Murderer," whose conviction was overturned by the courts in August, might not be able to get out of prison after all. The state of Wisconsin has filed an appeal at the last minute, which means that the legal battle for the 26-year-old is far from over. Meanwhile, as Steven Avery's legal team has undergone a few changes, "Making a Murderer" creators have scored four major trophies at the recent Emmys Creative Awards event.
"We believe the magistrate judge's decision that Brendan Dassey's confession was coerced by investigators, and that no reasonable court could have concluded otherwise, is wrong on the facts and wrong on the law," the state of Wisconsin declared in its appeal, per NBC New York. Now that this is set in motion, the "Making a Murderer's" subject could find that his prison time will be extended, pending a new court date that will be set for the appeal hearing.
Brendan Dassey is supposed to be released this November. However, if the appeal proceedings will take long, then he's not likely to get out of prison just yet. "Making a Murderer" producers said they will be there to document everything, per Variety.
Meanwhile, at the Emmys Creative Awards event on Saturday, "Making a Murderer" walked away with four big wins. The Netflix documentary won for Outstanding Documentary, while creators Moira Demos and Laura Ricciardi won for Outstanding Directing, Writing and Editing, per Deadline.
Demos and Ricciardi will also keep documenting Steven Avery for "Making a Murderer," as he awaits the trial for his appeal. Per The Wrap, Avery has reorganized his legal team. Counsel Tricia J. Bushnell has become an associate in the case, while Steven G. Richards is the new local counsel.
"Tricia is not leaving the team, her role just changed," said Justin Scott of the Innocence Project. "The team is evolving by adding Richards and his local expertise."
The second season's release has not yet been determined on Netflix, as the case continues to unfold with new developments. However, "Making a Murderer" Season 1 is still streaming, so viewers can catch up on what the case is about. More on this in the story in the video below.
