The Emmys will once again hand out its major awards to the best of television on Sunday, Sept. 25. First time nominee "The Americans" has been touted as one of the strongest contenders. Vying for Best Drama, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Writing, could this year be "The Americans'" big Emmy year?
CNN reports that "The Americans" could finally win the gold this Sunday, after three years of getting the snub from the Emmy voters. "The Americans" executive producers Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg claimed they have pretty much gotten used to being ignored in TV's major awards event, so the nomination was rather unexpected. "It turns out it's actually really nice to actually get the nominations," Fields told CNN.
On Sunday, viewers of "The Americans" will be expecting the show to beat "Game of Thrones," "House of Cards," "Homeland," "Better Call Saul" and "Mr. Robot" as the Best Drama series. "'The Americans' is probably the biggest competition for 'Game of Thrones' this year because it has been a long-time snub at the Emmys and this was the FX drama's finest season," said critic James Hibberd, via Reuters.
Viewers also hope Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell will bring home the trophies for Best Actor and Best Actress. Fields and Weisberg's work as writers of "The Americans" Season 4 finale episode is also up for a Best Writing award. The show is already off to a good start because Margo Martindale won as Best Guest Actress for "The Americans" during the Creative Emmys event the previous Sunday, per Deadline.
"The Americans," which airs on cable network FX, is a story about a couple with two young children. Though from the outside the Jennings look like a typical American family, Elizabeth (Russell) and Philip (Rhys) actually work for the KGB, and their own children have no idea. The series is set in the 80s, during the height of the Cold War between America and Russia.
FX has renewed "The Americans" for a fifth and sixth season - its final offering. Filming for "The Americans" Season 5 is expected to begin this fall.
