On a chilly 13-degree day, two young boys were spotted strolling in the Corio park on their own, Herald Sun reports.
The Corio locals were alarmed when they observed that no adult was with the children to supervise them. The weather was cold and the two young boys, aged 2 and 18 months, were only wearing their nappies. The concerned citizens took the toddlers, dressed them up to keep them warm and reported the incident to the police.
Many believed that the children were just living nearby and happened to escape their home while their mother was asleep.
The officers received the call and responded to it. They took the boys to the Corio police station before 4 p.m. and have the kids under their custody.
While the kids were in the police station they were fed with a bottle of formula and were provided with toys to keep them occupied while the authorities commenced a search for any relative.
After a desperate search for any relatives, the police failed to locate the boys' family. Thus, they decided to release the image of the boys to the media in hopes that anyone will recognize them. However, they did not get any response. The police did not also receive any call from the family about the missing boys.
Despite the difficulty in locating the family of the toddlers, the police remained determined to search for the boys' family so they will be returned to their own home. Thus, the police doorknocked the homes near the park and eventually got into an unlocked home.
A police spokesman said, "The police found the door to the home unlocked and a woman asleep on the couch who did not know where her children were." The police found out that the woman was the toddlers' mother.
According to Herald Sun, "It looks like the mother nodded off at some point in the afternoon and the boys took a stroll to the park together."
The mother went to the police station to check the children. Eventually, the children were safely returned in their home in Geelong, which is about 7 kilometers from southwest of Melbourne. The mother was not charged with any offense after the incident.
The source revealed that the woman was a single mother and is always at home. She was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs when the police found her.
On the other hand, after the successful operation of returning the toddlers to their mother safely, the officers would like to extend their gratitude to the public and members of the media for the assistance they received, Mail Online notes.
