Viveport's launch has officially been announced by HTC, the creator of Vive virtual-reality headset on Friday. Viveport is an app store for Vive users where they can connect with other consumers, explore and even create their own virtual-reality content.
HTC's $800 virtual-reality headset that makes the VR users experience a computer-generated 3D environment, will now have a broader exploration for its user through Viveport. The app store will not just focus on games, but is also set to distinguish itself with more non-gaming VR experiences. As the app store expands its range, they will offer a broader VR experiences including design, music, education, art, travel and many more, according to CNET.
Viveport was only available in China and now HTC expands its platform for its consumers and VR users in 30 countries. The app store's launch comes with 60 titles available for now. HTC's attempt to getting into VR software might start a competition as the consumers buy, run apps and games either through HTC's partnership with Valve, Steam, or other third-party services.
Viveport's contents for its premiere include Everest VR, theBlu, The Music Room, Stonehenge VR and more. Rikard Steiber, President of Viveport mentioned that soon, there will be over 500 VR titles to choose from and 90 percent are games, according to Venture Beat. Steiber also mentioned that Viveport will not force the developers to exclusively put their apps in the Viveport store.
The president of Viveport said in a statement, "We want to make it very frictionless to come to Viveport. You can get quality titles. It's hand curated." As part of the app store being official, Viveport launches several titles for only $1 over the next 48 hours of its launch.
