Many people, if not all, will agree that family involvement is important in a child's education. Apparently, this view is being supported by a study showing that there is a link between high educational attainment and family structure.
The study was done by Penn State researchers Jonathan Daw and Ashton Verdery, together with Rachel Margolis, which was published by Population and Development Review, according to Phys.Org. Daw reportedly said that the higher levels of education was accompanied by an increased likelihood of having two parents, grandparents and a spouse, along with the slightly decreased probability of having more than one child.
Comparing a child raised in blended - a family consist of a couple and their children from current and all previous relationships - or single-parent families, individuals from intact families, on average, completed more years of schooling. Furthermore, they were also more likely to finish high school, go to college and complete a degree, Family Facts.Org reported.
In addition, it was found out that youths with families who were intact were less likely to show problems in behaviour in school. Instead, these individuals have higher levels of academic achievement.
Another research conforms that a family structure plays an important role in several areas of a child's life. Based on the said research brief, which was published in the Institute for American Values, that area in particular was the outcome in education.
The academic research suggests that other than the educational achievement at the elementary, secondary and college levels, pre-school readiness is affected by family structure. Moreover, family structure also influences the child's misbehaviour in school, sexual activity and teen pregnancy, psychological distress and drug and alcohol addiction.
In closing, the aforementioned study do not only suggest the link of family structure and academic development of the children. It can also significantly affect the children's social development.
