Sony, makers of the PlayStation 4, quietly released the console's 4.01 firmware update recently. The update itself didn't really have that booming effect in contrast to the 4.00 release back in September, but as they say, an update is an update. It's not the best PS4 update Sony released in recent memory, but at least they rolled out something.
Scour the World Wide Web and tech sites will give you one lackluster answer: for instance, VG 24/7 said that the "ol' one-sentence patch note" for the PS4 updates is back in their latest exploit. Admittedly, it reads, "this system software update improves the quality of the system performance." PlayStation Lifestyle meanwhile brightened the rather dull update description a bit by saying that the 300MB patch "adds a bit more of that stability that Sony loves to dish out every now and then".
Sony must remember that the PS4 is their silver bullet in their fight for console domination. Needless to say, this one-liner update didn't go out with a bang among fans, critics or even neutrals. The PS4 may very well be one of the more versatile gaming machines out in the market, and adding "stability" in performance without saying much about it is downright awkward.
On the other hand, PlayStation Lifestyle also thinks that the latest PS4 update "could very well be to prep our consoles for PlayStation VR". Be that as it may, Sony should have at least included it in their PS4 patch notes not only to make it longer, but appealing to PS4 users around the world. Gaming Bolt, another site with a bit of a soft side for Sony's PS4 update reiterated that even though Sony "understandably" didn't "tell us" what's in store, the PS4 update "might as well have reworked" several issues like background framework, "plug security holes and exploits" and of course, bugs and glitches PS4 users might have reported to Sony.
To have a bit of comparison, the previous PS4 update, which went live on September 13, was Sony's first improvement to the console after the announcement of the PS4 Pro. It included a slew of developments such the inclusion of High Dynamic Range, or HDR on all PS4 consoles, usability improvements and data transfer between wired PS4 consoles. Likewise, Update 4.0 gave the PS4 Folders for organization, PS4 Pro exclusive features, improved its Quick Menu and redesigned its What's New and Content Info screen.
