It's been nearly 30 years since we first saw a self-lacing sneaker. It was on the big screen, yes, but in Back to the Future II, Marty McFly gave us a glimpse that someday, that very technology will wound its way to our time. Fast forward to today; Nike has announced that sneaker freakers might just get a pair of the Nike Mag soon.
According to Quartz, Nike's recent release said that it will "raffle off 89 pairs" of the Mag, a limited edition shoe that is equipped "power lacing" technology and of course, light up panels to add more flair to its already eye-candy design and reputation. Shoe collectors from the United States and Canada can get their hands, or rather, feet on these awesome Nike kicks provided that they have a ticket. Think of it as an entry pass to a possible once in a lifetime chance to own a revolutionary sneaker that will stand the test of time and fashion.
"In partnership with the Michael J. Fox Foundation (MJFF), Nike will provide everyone an opportunity to win one of the only pairs of the adaptive-lacing Nike Mag," the company said in its website. It further added that "there's no limit to the number of tickets you can buy"; each ticket will cost $10 and are sold through nike.com/mag or via the Nike+ app. Every purchase, Nike added, will go directly to the MJFF to help find a cure for Parkinson's disease. The draw will start today and will stretch until October 11. Winners will then be notified by Nike on October 17.
Aside from the fact that 100% of the proceeds will benefit a charitable institution, Nike's latest endeavor will also set the hype for the yet another milestone. In March, Nike announced the HyperAdopt 1.0 that's designed for athletes. It is made with the same technology as the Mag and it uses a "heel sensor" to tighten the shoe. Owners can adjust the fit via buttons on the side so that there is a "symbiotic relationship between the foot and the shoe." It will be available in three colorways by the end of the month through Nike+.
