'The Crown' Season 1 News & Update: Netflix Has Potential Hit But Is Royal Drama Making Brits Uneasy?

Netflix's "The Crown" debuts on the streaming platform on Friday, Nov. 4. The drama series about Queen Elizabeth II is pegged to become another hit. However, the subject and the story of "The Crown" are supposedly making the British uneasy.

With Claire Foy playing the role of Queen Elizabeth II in her early 20s, the first season of "The Crown" is expected to deliver a rich story in 10 episodes. "The Crown" series will begin with the royals as newlyweds and Elizabeth assuming the throne following the death of her father, King George.

While early critic reviews have been raving about "The Crown," royal experts claim that some Brits are opposed to the way Prince Philip (played by Matt Smith) has been depicted in the series, Forbes reports. The royals are also said to be feeling "very, very nervous" about the show, according to Bazaar. Yet "The Crown" writer and creator Peter Morgan also said that he's aware the royals are also excited for the series.

In a previous Parent Herald report, Morgan has revealed that he didn't personally consult with the British family for the material on "The Crown," which could explain part of the apprehension. "I think they don't like not having control, but I think they also understand that dealing with this subject matter with some degree of respect, you know, even objective scrutiny is a rare thing," the writer said in the Bazaar report.

"The Crown" writer and creator has been documenting and producing stories about the British monarchy for years. Some of his works include "The Queen," "The Audience" and "The Other Boleyn Girl."

Meanwhile, even as "The Crown" has yet to debut on Netflix, the people behind the show have already mapped out a six-season plan, Nerdist reports. "The Crown" is one of Netflix's most expensive series to date, but as Telegraph cites, the gamble should be good for the streaming site as the initial episodes critics have already seen in advance deliver satisfaction.
