Model Rachel de Thame Banned From Breastfeeding at Chelsea Flower Show: 'I’m an Earth Mother'

Former model and current celebrity horticulturist Rachel de Thame recalled how she was prevented from breastfeeding while filming at the Chelsea Flower Show. The 53-year-old mother of four did not mention when it particularly happened.

Ms. de Thame is a familiar figure when it comes to gardening shows in BBC. According to The Guardian, she explained how she considers herself to be an Earth mother who loves to give birth and breastfeed. She thought that up until that moment, she was handling her balancing act between work and motherhood quite well.

She further added, "Having said there are as many opportunities for men as there are for women, I did notice that there weren't many show gardens designed by women this year at Chelsea and I am not sure what that's about."

She discussed how women are affected by motherhood and the responsibilities that come with it in terms of maintaining a career in her field. "Maybe the same issues that affect women working in other spheres do affect women in horticulture. We have babies. We are not available for full-time work.", she stated.

According to The Mirror, Ms. de Thame expressed how men and women see the designs in gardening. This was during an interview with the Radio Times Magazine.

"It's tricky but we definitely need both male and female designers in order to get balance. For me, women and men see things differently. Our eyes are made of rods and cones and men have more rods, which means they are prone to see structure etc. Women have more cones, which means we see and remember more colours and colour schemes. We definitely see things differently.", states Ms. de Thame.

Despite her various roles as woman, she still managed to come up with a successful career. She adds that even if people think that she just goes around smelling like roses, she works hard to get to where she is right now. "I'm a tomboy... I'm tough really."

She notes how she thought that her modelling career was not going to last long. However, she does not feel this way about gardening. She has a feeling that she will be doing it for a lifetime.

Ms. de Thame is also looking forward to be a grandmother for the second time since her 26-year-old daughter is pregnant. "Lauren is about to have her second child, so I'm enjoying being a granny," she said.
