As casting for "Star Trek: Discovery" gets underway, one former "Star Trek" icon expressed willingness to be in the reboot on CBS All Access. George Takei, who is famously known for his role as Mr. Sulu in the franchise, said in recent interview that if given a chance he would love to be a part of the new series.
Speaking with Radio Times, George Takei said he has full confidence that "Star Trek: Discovery" would be in good hands with showrunner Bryan Fuller. "[He] understands [creator] Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek," Mr. Sulu's alter ego said. "I'm looking forward to that version which I think is going to have that depth."
So enthusiastic is George Takei about "Star Trek: Discovery" that he would not say no to being on the show, if asked. The 79-year-old actor even has ideas about his potential role as "an old, ancient, grizzled, wise Sulu or an alien life form that sounds like Sulu - but older."
Digital Spy reports that "Star Trek: Discovery" might actually feature classic characters like Kirk, Spock and most likely Mr. Sulu. But this might not happen during the first season. Bryan Fuller said that the show will have to establish "Star Trek: Discovery" with today's audience first. "We'll be looking in the second season to open it up to more familiar characters and how they could feed into the weave," the showrunner indicated.
Meanwhile, last September, the people behind "Star Trek: Discovery" had to have a minor change to the show's release date on the streaming platform CBS All Access. From its original January 2017 release, the reboot will be ready to launch by May 2017.
Executive producers stated that they needed a longer time to ensure that the show would be a masterpiece loyal "Star Trek" fans would be pleased with. So far, "Star Trek: Discovery" will be one of two original series that will be carried into the streaming platform.
